Status
TBC is a private tunneling + Loop-operations company (SpaceX spinout, 2016–18). It is not inside the SpaceX/xAI public-company perimeter. Two live construction programs (Vegas, Nashville) plus a signed Dubai pilot.
Vegas Loop (operational; still expanding)
Company projects page (fetched 22 Aug 2026): - >4 million passengers through 11 open stations. - Entitled build-out: Clark County + City of Las Vegas approved 68 miles of tunnel and 104 stations. Design capacity up to 90,000 passengers/hour in final form; trip times 2–8 minutes to airport / Allegiant / downtown (target). - Open stations listed: LVCC South, LVCC Central, LVCC West, Central Plaza, Riviera, Resorts World, Encore, Westgate, Fountainebleau, Sahara, Airport T1, Airport T3. - LVCC Loop original: 1.7 miles, 3 stations, ~1 year, ~$47M firm-fixed; opened April 2021. Peak >4,500 pax/h and >32,000 pax/day. Expanded 2024 to 2.1 miles / 5 stations. - Connectors: Resorts World (2022), Westgate (2024, Prufrock porpoise retrieve), Encore (2025, <10 weeks site-to-tunnel-complete, ~55 s transit vs ~15 min surface rush hour).
Nashville FAQ (updated 14 August 2026) still quotes an older Vegas ridership line (“>3.3 million passengers, 8 stations”) and “airport hopefully opening Q1 2026.” The projects page is the later operational snapshot (11 stations, 4M+ riders, airport T1/T3 listed as open). Do not mix the two without a date.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG 3–7 March 2026: secondary coverage of a company/event figure of ~82,000 Loop passengers in 5 days. Not on boringcompany.com/projects.
9–10 March 2026: company X account (quoted by Teslarati and others) — Prufrock-2 completed a 2.28-mile Westgate-area drive (prior internal record 2.26 mi), ~68k cubic yards, ~4.8 mi conveyor / 6 motors / 825 hp, 4th tunnel at Westgate. Primary is the @boringcompany post, not independently archived here.
Music City Loop — Nashville (under construction)
Official: https://www.boringcompany.com/music-city-loop (FAQ last updated 14 Aug 2026). - ~25 miles, downtown / MCC / Lower Broadway ↔ West End ↔ BNA. ~10 min BNA→Lower Broadway. - Twin unidirectional 12-ft ID tunnels, ~30 ft deep. Tesla Model Y / Model X, human Loop drivers initially (autonomy “explore later”). Up to 70 mph. - 100% privately funded (no taxpayer construction/ops $). Total cost “a few hundred million”; fares not announced. - Tunneling is underway. First launch: Lot 16 near TN State Capitol; two TBMs on-site and tunneling. FAQ says a third machine (press: Prufrock-MB3) is expected; company blog cadence is every 2 months (next post was due 1 Aug 2026 — check whether published). - >40 stations in various stages of design. Announced/press: BNA, Music City Center, JW Marriott, residential Prime/Alcove/Paramount. - Geotech disclosed: 49 TBC borings, 93 prior logs, ~3,550 ft seismic, 187 historical top-of-rock points. - Safety: NFPA-130; Vegas Loop TSA Gold Standard July 2025, score 99.51%. - Opening: company does not put a passenger-open date on the FAQ. Local press (Yahoo / Nashville Scene) cites early 2027. Mark as press, not TBC commitment.
Dubai Loop — under contract
Projects page: construction contract with Dubai RTA. Pilot 6.4 km, 4 stations, construction to begin late 2026. Status: Under Contract (not yet “under construction”).
Other TBC assets
- Cybertunnel (Giga Texas): operational. Prufrock-3 porpoised onto “The Monster” inside the factory; ~60 s vs 12 min surface.
- R&D tunnels: 7 tunnels in Hawthorne CA, Adelanto CA, Bastrop TX.
- Hyperloop: 2022 Bastrop vacuum test tunnel; student pod comps to 288 mph. Not a passenger system.
Prufrock (TBM)
https://www.boringcompany.com/prufrock - Target speed >1 mile/week (6× Godot). Target all-in Loop tunnel cost <$8M/mile. - Porpoising: truck in, launch <24 h, emerge onto “The Monster” trailer — no launch/retrieval pits or big cranes. - Continuous mining: liner installed while mining (vs stop-every-5-ft). - ZPIT (zero people in tunnel) from an Operations Control Center. - Vertical integration of TBMs, liners, Loop ops. Standardized 12-ft design across geologies. - Page highlights Prufrock-4 (continuous mining + ZPIT) and porpoising demos. Live Vegas/Nashville machines are Prufrock-2 / Prufrock-3 / Prufrock-MB — fleet numbering is not fully tabulated on the public page.*
Business
- Last closed round widely cited: Series C April 2022, ~$5.7B valuation, ~$676M raised (Sequoia, Vy, Valor, Founders Fund, etc.). Sacra lifetime funding ~$0.9B.
- 25 July 2026: Wall Street Journal (via TechCrunch) — TBC in talks for ~$4B at ~$20B valuation. Deal has not closed; terms can change. Musk has not confirmed on the company site.
- Revenue: not disclosed. Mix is Vegas fares + LVCVA operating arrangements + (possible) station/real-estate deals. Third-party annual-revenue guesses ($25M–$500M) are noise — do not use.
- Environmental/safety: TechCrunch notes Nevada regulator allegations (~800 violations / missed inspections) and worker injuries. Company has disputed aspects of the 2025 cease-and-desist. Fact of the dispute is real; counts are regulator vs company.
Next milestone
| Timing | Item | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Late 2026 | Dubai Loop construction start (6.4 km / 4 stations) | Company “will begin” |
| 2H 2026 | Nashville: 3rd TBM (MB3) on site; more station easements; possible first tunnel breakthrough | Press + FAQ “scaling tunneling” |
| Early 2027 (press) | Music City Loop passenger service | Unconfirmed by TBC FAQ |
| 2026 | Vegas: more twin tunnels / Strip + stadium fill-in toward 68 mi / 104 stations | Entitled, not scheduled |
| Unknown | Close (or fail) of the reported $4B / $20B round | Unconfirmed |
| Unknown | Driverless Loop vehicles | Explicitly later; drivers first in Nashville |
Competition
Loop is not a subway. Company contrast: point-to-point Teslas, cheap small stations, adding a stop does not slow other trips. Conventional competitors:
| Alternative | Where it bites TBC |
|---|---|
| Nashville “Choose How You Move” (Nov 2024 referendum) | City-funded surface transit; TBC says Loop complements it. Political/funding competition for riders, not for the tunnel contract (TBC is private). |
| Las Vegas Monorail / RTC buses / taxis / Uber | Vegas Loop is winning convention-campus and resort-connector trips; airport stations now listed open — watch whether airport↔Strip share moves from taxis. |
| Heavy-rail / LRT / metro boring (Herrenknecht, Robbins, traditional TBMs) | TBC’s bet is cost/speed via porpoising + ZPIT + 12-ft standard. Independent verification of <$8M/mile all-in and >1 mi/week in limestone (Nashville) is the 2026–27 engineering test. Traditional urban rail remains higher-capacity per portal. |
| Other US pitches (Baltimore, Chicago, LA) | WSJ says TBC has pitched them. No construction. Chicago historically did not proceed. |
Engineering risk to watch: Nashville limestone/karst vs Vegas mixed alluvium/caliche; dual-TBM launch from Lot 16; muck logistics; whether ZPIT actually runs with zero people in tunnel on production drives.
